We the undersigned petition the Prime Minister to take immediate action on the Economic Partnership Agreements (EPAs) being negotiated between Europe and 76 African, Caribbean and Pacific (ACP) countries. Zambia is projected to lose up to $15 million – the same amount its government spends on HIV/AIDS annually. This is just one example of how the current agreements could jeopardise progress towards the Millennium Development Goals.
With the deadline only weeks away, we are concerned the EU is putting intense pressure on ACP countries to sign these unfair deals.
Prime Minister, please fulfil the promises you and the Government have made to make trade work for development and use all your influence to:
Publicly support ACP country requests for more time to negotiate pro-development deals
Insist to the European Commission that no country should face higher tariffs on January 1, 2008 if they do not sign an EPA
Ensure Parliament has the opportunity to debate the agreements before they are signed.
