South West Trains announced in March 2007 that they will be increasing rail fares by as much as 20% for those travelling between 9.30am and noon (12pm), a time which has always been construde as off-peak.
This increase is in addition to the 5.3% price increase in rail fares introduced in January.
SWT are only able to get away with this as off-peak fares are not regulated and neither SWT or any other rail company have to have these price hikes approved by the government.
