We the undersigned petition the Prime Minister to Preserve and Invest in the Portable Antiquities Scheme. More details
Submitted by Kevin Haughton of UK Detector Net – Deadline to sign up by: 13 February 2008 – Signatures: 2,080
In the week it emerged that the government was soon to announce that the £510m Stonehenge roads and visitor project was to be scrapped, the museums, Libraries and Archives Council said it planned to shed the Portable Antiquities Scheme's central unit, effectively initiating the scheme's end.
By ring-fencing the budget for the PAS, the Government can preserve the registration vehicle for the UK's many thousands of responsible Metal Detectorists and general public. This in turn will enable those many thousands of people to contnue registering treasures unearthed, while going about their daily lives, and thus providing everyone access to our history for generations to come.
