More details from petition creator
This year marks the 200th year since the abolition of slave trade and therefore many activities and events are taking place around the world to mark this anniversary, including the opening of the first Slave Trade Museum in this country.
Many people recognise that slave trade still exists in many different forms and therefore the fight against slave trade continues. Is it therefore about time that this country took a leading tangible role in recognising slavery in a more positive light? By recognising the contribution to wealth generation made by slaves around the world rather than focusing on them as sold items? Their hard work is visible across our cities.
I would like to petition to print a pound note with a face of an individual that represent those who not only suffered consciously but directly, the ills of slave trade. This would be in recognition of their initial and continuous contribution to the wealth of this country, and the ongoing fight against modern-slavery.
The Brown Pound Not£ would be a tangible recognition seen around the world. It will be a constant reminder as it changes hands. It is a strong recognition.
